Super Moon On Kentucky Lake

All the photos in this post were taken by my nephew, David Cullen - a wonderful photographer.   They were taken a few weeks ago right here in my neighborhood at Paris Landing on Kentucky Lake during the Super Moon.

His kiddos - Sara and Josh, went with him and of course couldn't resist picking up a few rocks and shells in the moonlight.

A Walk In The Park

Paris Landing State Park is the jewel of my neighborhood and you never know what you’ll get to see there.  I went the other day to check out their fall decorating.  They always have the prettiest displays.

I had just taken this photo of the really cool fall display at the Tourist Office when I heard the unmistakable “thump thump thump thump” of a helicopter and headed over to the picnic area to see what was happening.

Caught the 5th Special Forces Group out of Ft. Campbell practicing over Kentucky Lake.  So proud of these brave folks and happy to have them as neighbors.

They were so far away I barely caught them with my little point-and-shoot camera but you can see a lot more photos of them on their Facebook page or read about their history here.  It was a really windy day.

And of course, I had to get a shot of one of my favorite views.

The bridge never changes but the clouds always give it a different look.

See how windy it was.

Love this display!

And I almost forgot the main reason I went.  Just wanted to let the folks in my neighborhood know, you don't have to drive all the way to Paris to recycle.

Henry County has placed recycling bins next to the State Park Tourist office.

Sweet October

Photos by Michelle Reece
All the photos in this post were made by Michelle Reece on an annual fall fishing/camping trip to Bard's Lake in Land Between the Lakes Recreation Area - just around the corner from Paris Landing.

Funny how people who fight getting out of bed early to go to work aren't bothered in the least at getting up at the crack of dawn on a camping trip.

Good night.

First Day of Fall

Hard to believe it's the first day of Fall.

The temperatures in my neighborhood are are cooler but still in the 80's and high 70's.

The flowers seem to be enjoying these cooler days.

The tulip boat seems to be making one last ditch effort to just bloom it all out before the first frost.

And the tomatoes I planted in the spring ....

 ...  have gone beserk!

The Dogwoods have started to change colors.
It won't be long.

Happy Fall!

Hello September!

All photos in this post are by Deanna Cullen

Some of my favorite visitors were here this weekend from Memphis and snapped these photos.

Folks around here are usually so busy looking at the Lake,
sometimes we overlook the other beautiful scenery.

And I love what Deanna said about the Lake -
"Such a beautiful place and so very quiet. No city noise, no loud music or traffic
.....it is lovely just simply lovely."

Truer words were never spoken.  That's why so many of us have chosen to live here.

On a side note....  just wanted to remind everyone that the Arts and Crafts Show is this weekend at Paris Landing State Park.  While you are in our neighborhood, you really need to stop and visit at T.F. Rice & Company on the Lake Highway -  just a few miles down the road toward Paris.  T.F. Rice & Co. represents over 80 local artisans, including myself - Lee Owenby.
Everyday at T.F. Rice & Co. is like an arts and crafts show.

Rolling on the River

When I was just a little kid going for boat rides with my Dadda Hailey was always an adventure.   When I received this photo this morning, I had a flash back to way back when.  I can see him driving his little fishing/ski boat wide open to catch up to this barge so three little kids (my sister, brother and me)  can jump up and down in the boat, wave, make all sorts of gestures trying to get the barge captain to blow the horn.   And then, when he does blow it .... it's so loud it almost knocks us out of the boat  ... and Dadda Hailey laughing.

On the way to Kentucky Dam ...   Photo courtesy of John Peddy at Sweetvalley Cabin Rental

"Rolling, rolling, rolling on the river.

If you come down to the river,
Bet you gonna find some people who live.
You don't have to worry 'cause you have no money,
People on the river are happy to give.

Rolling, rolling, rolling on the river.
Rolling, rolling, rolling on the river.
Rolling, rolling, rolling on the river."

Flags!!!

I always like a good American Flag display and lately the folks around Paris Landing have really been outdoing themselves.  Here's a few I think are particularly nice.

In Russwood

At Eagles Rest in Russwood

At Sweetvalley

Shady Crest
Elephants and flags seem to be new theme.

Hunter Lane
Another Elephant.  This one seems to be particularly happy under her flag.

This one in Pine Point should win a flag for being the largest.

One of the nice things about living in the country versus the big city, you can always see the sky.

"The Fog Comes On Little Cat Feet"

Fog
by Carl Sandburg

The fog comes on little cat feet.
It sits looking over harbor and city,
on silent haunches and then moves on.

Or ...

It engulfs you.

To see more photos of fog on the lake you can click on "Fog" in the label section in
the right column of this page.

Summertime And The Living Is Easy

"It's summertime and the living is easy.  Fish are jumping and the cotton is high."  Well, I'm not sure about the cotton, but everything else is true.

The weather this summer has been perfect for the laid back, slow moving life style that folks in my neighborhood seem to enjoy.  It's been hot, but not too hot.  We've had rain, but not too much or too little.  Everyone's gardens seem to be doing great.

A few of July 4th visitors turning the lake into a mixing bowl.

The crowds from July 4th have all gone back to their cities and my neighbors have reclaimed our lake. And yes, the fish are jumping.  Fishing this summer has been great as evidenced by this nice catch John Peddy over at Sweetvalley Cabin made.

Yes, it's true.  Life's better at the lake!

New U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services Facility

The new U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services facility at 1371 Wildlife Drive (Swamp Creek Road) in Springville  is almost ready for its grand opening on July 19th.    It will become the headquarters for three Tennessee River refuge units - Big Sandy, Duck River and Busseltown.  In addition to administrative offices the facility will also house exhibit space, a bookstore, classroom and auditorium.

You can follow it’s progress on the Facebook page for the Friends of Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge.

Hello July!

90 degrees and rising

Our first red tomatoes and this one is perfect!

We only grow a few tomatoes and our grandchildren love that we string them up on the porch rail.  When they come to visit they fill up on these small plum tomatoes.

The Day Lilies are still blooming!

And the Crepe Myrtles are just getting started.  They'll bloom until frost around here.

Life is good at the lake.

Tulip Boat Revisited

This boat is one of my favorite scenes here at Paris Landing.  It's not my boat, but I wish it was.    The owners keep it planted with blooming flowers all during the growing season.

Here are a couple of photos from previous years.
